I wouldn't be surprised if this was a case where Bandai Namco didn't want it to be, but the producer, Futami, insisted on it.įrom the producer himself - every main game from Hollow Fragment to Fatal Bullet has sold over a million copies. Several of the gameverse heroines show up as AIs too in the post game, and Last Recollection references those AIs appearing by the real heroines.īut yeah, the marketing REALLY tried to go out of it's way to pretend it wasn't part of the game continuity and was a straight adaptation of Volumes 9 through 14 of the novel series. Yuuki's survival, meeting Strea, Philia, and the others, and so forth. There are also a ton of side scenes where they reference things that only happen in the game continuity. The recap feature mentions them going to Floor 100 of Aincrad, as well as playing Sword Art: Origin. Alicization Lycoris DOES reference several events from previous gameverse games, however. Alicizaiton Lycoris is the first time he meets them properly. Kirito knowing Eugeo and Alice in HR/FB is entirely non-canonical DLC for those games. They went above and beyond in a way few games did so. Most non SAO fans don't know this, but Alicizaiton Lycoris received incredible post launch support. But for a game that was touted as the 10th anniversary game, and the grand finale of the Sword Art Online Gameverse continuity, it is a disappointment on several levels. The author of Violet Evergarden wrote it, and she did not disappoint in this regard with some wonderful original characters and Kirito is at his absolute best, writing wise. The main game has been awesome and the story has been absolutely fantastic. It's a solid 7/10 game still despite everything. The character events they DO have are often short and all follow a similar pattern too, so you don't get any real charming side events with the group hanging out, or any detailed character events that flesh out the characters better. There are too many playable characters and as a result most of them only get one or two character events. The MMO style role system has been simplified. The spiraling Xenoblade style maps of Lycoris are gone and replaced with maps that are much smaller and more focused. On top of that, where as Alicization Lycoris was too ambitious for it's own good, Last Recollection is not ambitious enough, and they dialed it back in so many different ways. It's a direct sequel to one of the more controversial games, so to get the full benefit you have to play that. Most SAO fans are not happy about that, and non-SAO fans probably couldn't give a shit at all. So in terms of combat, it feels very polished.īut honestly? Once you get past that, it's a very conservatively produced Sword Art Online game. Likewise the technical and performance issues that plagued Alicization Lycoris are completely gone. The main story is great, and the new original characters are very likable. I'm almost done with Last Recollection right now on chapter 10 out of 11, and I can honestly understand why it's not doing too well. As you can tell, the quality is all over the place as a result. Currently in extended maintenance for a year because it was rushed out too early.īandai Namco basically shuffles developer after developer to push out a game yearly, it seems like.
